The Council of Canadians and the Ottawa Independent Media Centre invite you to a free public screening of "New World Border".

Wednesday, August 1, 2007, 7:00 - 9:00pm

Downstairs Auditorium, Ottawa Public Library, Main Branch (Laurier Ave. W. and Melcalfe St.)

"New World Border" is a short film which documents the rise of human rights abuses along the US-Mexico border since the implementation of border walls (such as Operation Gatekeeper) that have been erected in populated areas throughout the border region during the last decade. This documentary includes interviews with immigrant rights organizers, testimony from immigrants, analysis of 'free trade' policies, and discusses current efforts to build a vibrant movement for immigrant rights.

"A must-see documentary for the American society of the 21st century...this documentary has powerful and graphic explanatory power: why so many people have been crossing the border into El Norte, the repressions and brutalities they have experienced, their fears but also their hopes and dreams, and their reaffirmation of our identity as a nation of immigrants and the human rights embedded in our country's founding principles" -- Ronald Takaki, Professor of Ethnic Studies, University of California, Berkeley

This event is part of the lead-up to protests against the upcoming visit of the "three amigos" (Bush, Calderon and Harper) to discuss the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP, aka NAFTA + Homeland Security). Stuart Trew of the Council of Canadians will speak about the SPP and its impact upon Canadian foreign policy, immigration and democracy in Canada.

There will also be a few short screenings of other videos pertaining to the upcoming anti-SPP protests, as well as previous protests this summer re. Atlantica and the deployment of Canadians troops to Afghanistan from CFB Valcartier. Independent journalist Jessie, who works with CKUT and CKCU community radio in Montreal and Ottawa, was there. She will discuss the links between the war abroad and the war at home, and the dynamics of protest and resistance.

Videos and presentations will be followed by audience discussion.

This event is the first in a series in support of the ongoing independent media mobilization against the upcoming visit of Bush and Calderòn to Canada. Stay tuned for details about an upcoming independent media activist training workshop!
