An introduction to the London Indymedia web site
Purpose of the site
The site is mainly for communication about activism and politics (which certainly needn't be government-related). We strive to give a voice to people and issues that have been neglected by the mainstream media, while working to establish and maintain a centre of community involvement in the London area.
How the site works
Articles
We hope you'll post articles, which are displayed on the right side of the main page. (To post material there, click "Post to the site" along the left side, then click "Article".) This area of the site is "an open publishing forum." There are "news," "commentary," "announcement," "creative," and "interview" sections. Feel free to approach those section labels loosely.
(Note: if you will be including HTML in your submission, be sure to change the "Text Format" to "HTML Formatted")
Feature Articles
If you want to talk with us about featuring your article on the front and centre of the site, e-mail us at london-ontario-imc at lists.indymedia.org (a publicly archived mailing list) with either a link to an article you've already posted to the site, or with the full text of a potential feature article -- including its title.
For now we're looking for feature articles that focus somewhat on the London area.
Who operates the site
We strive to take an inclusive approach to operating the site. To those ends, we hold public meetings, which are announced on our mailing list (always), on the calendar on the London Indymedia site (usually), and on the London Commons calendar (usually). A lot of our discussions also are on a public mailing list; anyone can subscribe to it or read the archives. You can sign up for the mailing list here: http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/london-ontario-imc.
Editorial policy
Although we try to avoid hiding article submissions (which means removing them from the main page), we do follow an editorial policy. This policy mainly was made in anticipation of people abusing the site (by posting commercial spam, for instance), but there are also sociopolitical considerations behind the policy. We will remove "hateful" submissions, for example. On the Indymedia web site you can reach the editorial policy through the "Editorial policy" link, which you can get to by clicking "About" near the to-left of the site.
The Indymedia network
London Indymedia is part of the online “Indymedia” network, which includes over 150 other Indymedia groups and web sites internationally (though mainly in the U.S. and in Western Europe). If you want to learn more about the international Indymedia network, the Wikipedia entry about Indymedia is a great place to start. You can also visit the international front page of the Indymedia network at: http://indymedia.org.
There is a list of links to other Indymedia sites along the left side of the London Indymedia site, where you also can see article titles and links from elsewhere in the Indymedia network.
