December 22, 2006

Minister MacKay,

As someone concerned about the protection of human rights worldwide, I am writing to express my great concern about your government's lack of response to the violence being perpetrated by the Mexican government against the people of the state of Oaxaca. I request that you urge the Mexican government – an ally of the Canadian government – to immediately end all acts of repression against the Oaxacan people and to heed their longstanding demand for the removal and trial of Governor Ulises Ruiz.
I strongly feel that the Canadian government should speak out against the Mexican state's brutal repression of the Oaxacan people, including murders, forced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, torture of detainees, and armed attacks on peaceful protestors. It is crucial that the Canadian government, as one of Mexico's closest political and economic allies, supports the rights of the people in Oaxaca to participate in a peaceful social movement for their basic human rights.
I and many other Canadians will continue to pay close attention to the situation in Oaxaca and oppose all acts of aggression that are carried out against its people. We will also pay close attention to the response of your government to the situation in Oaxaca and are hopeful that you will take a stand for human rights and dignity.

Sincerely, NAME: ADDRESS:
