o Counter-Stryker is a group focused on the ethics and politics issues of military and corporate research conducted at UWO and at Canadian universities in general. We object to universities becoming integrated into military production by the lure of corporate funding.

o In December of 2004 President Davenport announced that members of the UWO Faculty of Engineering had a four year contract with the corporation General Dynamics for research to improve its Stryker Light Armored Vehicles.

o General Dynamics is amongst the world’s largest arms manufacturers, central to the US military industrial complex.

o A Stryker is an eight wheeled fighting vehicle that carries troops into battle, can operate under conditions of nuclear, biological and chemical war, and mounts a variety of weapons, ranging from machine guns to missiles to 105 mm cannon.

o The majority of the Strykers General Dynamics will produce are for the US Army; These Stryker vehicles are currently deployed in Iraq.

o The UWO research project will improve General Dynamics Strykers. The current research contract was established without open discussion within the university, let alone among the broader public.

o The UWO administration has chosen to assist in weapons-manufacture without consulting the public. We demand that future military-industrial partnerships under consideration be subjected to open discussion and debate. We oppose the Stryker research contract and aim to speak directly to those who are, or may become, involved in this projects or others like it. We aim to show companies such as General Dynamics that the price of campus involvement is open, critical public discussion of their activities.

o Up Coming Event: Movie Screening of Sir! No Sir! This is a film about American troops resisting war. It will take place on October 20 2006 at 4:30 on Western Campus’ North Campus Building Room 113
