Armed with flowers, balloons and squirt guns, a group of clowns marched to Wolseley Barracks yesterday to protest Canada's role in Afghanistan.

The group, called the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army started its protest with music, food and speeches at McMahen Park off Adelaide Street before leaving for the march, one on a tricycle.

"We think it is a good way to make the issue serious," said spokesperson Tarek Loubani, a UWO medical student who goes by the name of Field Marshmallow Zonkers in the Rebel Clown Army.

"There is no better way than to dress up as a clown and hold up the spectacle of Canadian soldiers being in Afghanistan when the Canadian populace doesn't want them there."

The group is not against the Canadian military being in Afghanistan, just the work it is doing there, he said.

"When you tell people the Canadian military is based on peacekeeping, we think that is deceitful . . . It's ridiculous," he said. "Just like clowns."
